Right Under Your Nose

It was a day where the sun shone brightly over neighbourhood Oldville. The houses there seemed alike: pale peach walls, dark brown tiles for the roof and very small yards. The gates to the entrance creaked open, and two people sauntered over to start a long day of taking care of old people.

“I still don’t get it,” said Bob. “They have all that money, but nothing to spend it for. They should give their money to me so I could buy that mansion!” Although Tom thought this idea was okay, he could find no reason why the elder people needed to give away money to anyone just so they could get something they don’t need. If the people in Oldville won’t give what they have, however, Bob was going to find some way to get it. But would there be chaos? Tom though so. He had the feeling a lot was going to happen the next few days.

“It looks like that you are assigned to take care of Sammy, house number 11235. She is probably the richest person in this neighbourhood,” stated Tom. Bob abruptly stopped walking.

“Ah-ha!” he exclaimed. “I’ll get there right away!” The person who was now beside him added, “don’t go poking around her stuff, though. Sammy may not be able to talk, but her IQ level is above Genius.”

But Bob had already disappeared.

When the greedy man entered house 11235, he found Sammy staring at a TV screen, watching the news. “Uh…  do you need any help?” asked Bob.

            Silence.

There were vegetables on the table, waiting to be taken out from the bag. “I think I will take those things and put them in the freezer for you, is that all right?” Sammy didn’t speak at all, which Bob took as a “yes.”

As the groceries started disappearing, Bob realized a big pile of cash stashed safely in a cabinet. The man snatched the $5,000 and dashed out of the house as fast as possible, to make sure Sammy doesn’t realize who had took what she had just lost.

“Dude, you need to give that back! You are stealing!” exclaimed Tom. Bob had just shown him the money, and apparently, he was not pleased. “it’s mine now,” responded Bob. “I was there and the woman couldn’t do anything with that anyway.” Tom opened his mouth to speak, but Bob was already on his way home.

The next day, Bob entered Sammy’s house in record time, trying his best not to show his joy of having the chance to steal more things. He found a package at the front door. “Should I put this in your room?” Bob asked. The sound of snoring came as Sammy’s answer. “I will just unpack this box and put whatever’s inside it in your room,” said Bob. He opened the box, and found a small teddy bear beaming at him. He placed it on the shelf in Sammy’s room. Just as Bob was about to leave the room, he saw something glitter on Sammy’s bed. Bob glanced at the spot, and found a gold wristwatch. Without thinking twice, he took hold of it and sped out once again.

Bob was showing Tom his “profit” when their boss, Brandon, showed up.

            “What are you doing here?”

            “Er…  just talking?” stammered Bob.

“Looks like you two have nothing to do. Well, I have a special job for you guys then. Do me a favour. Sammy has set up a private TV channel for the people in Oldville to watch. Your jobs are to keep them entertained.”

Tom thought that was supposed to be part of his job. Bob, on the other hand, thought that was extra and made up an excuse.

“I really want to help, but my grandma is really sick and I want to take care of her. Tom can do it for me, can he?”

Brandon replied, “I like how you want to take care of everybody. I will let you do so, as long as Tom agrees.”

Tom really wanted to say yes, Bob was doing a good thing, right? But what if he was lying? What if he was going to continue stealing? “I will think about it,” answered Tom.

When Brandon had left the room, the first thing Tom asked to Bob was if he was actually going to do what he said. “I wasn’t telling the truth, but there isn’t anything you could do about it anyway. If you tell Brandon, I will just lie and say that you forced me to steal those stuff.”

Tom had reluctantly agreed to entertain the old people by himself. He entered the room, and found over 50 people staring at him! Tom turned the TV on, and saw something that seemed a little familiar. After a few seconds, he found Bob taking the gold watch on Sammy’s bed! Sammy changed the channel, and saw Bob stealing a silver necklace at another person’s house, at house 12321. At the top left, it showed a live sign. Brandon ran out of the room and found a silhouette of a tall man through the window.

He opened the door, and found Bob looking through the drawers. He suddenly froze when he saw Brandon looking right at his eyes.

“I know you have been stealing,” said Brandon.

“Wait! It isn’t my fault! Tom made me do this.”

“Well, in that case I will call the police to arrest both of you.”

The police arrived a few minutes later and handcuffed both Bob and Tom. It turned out that the teddy bears were actually security cameras and had caught Bob on camera. When Sammy found out that Tom was going to jail, she started shaking at her head.

“But Tom is also a criminal!”

Sammy desperately changed the channel and then there was Bob saying that he would lie to get Tom arrested as well.

“How clever you are, Bob,” said Brandon. “You even got Tom involved. In this case, unhandcuff Tom, police officer!”

“How did you realize that I was stealing though?” Bob asked Brandon.

Brandon responded thoughtfully, “It’s a long story, I will tell you later. But here is a piece of my advice: Whatever’s in the dark, always comes to light!”
